First cargo left Kitimat at the end of June 2025. Train 2 started in November. By spring the facility was near 87 percent utilization. Energy Intelligence says it is now approaching full use as Asia bids for cargoes the Middle East cannot send.
Partners authorized early work in June and Ottawa tagged the expansion a national-interest project. Phase 2 would double Kitimat to 28 million tonnes a year at a cost around C$33 billion. FID is still a late-2026 call.
Freeport maintenance has kept about 2 Bcf per day off the water since July 10. Train 3 tripped on August 19 after a power-feed interruption. Golden Pass loaded its seventh cargo this week as feedgas hit a six-week high. The U.S. export recovery is not here yet.
B.C. approved Cedar LNG at 3.75 million tonnes a year, up 25 percent. The Haisla-majority plant targets late 2028. Woodfibre near Squamish is about 60 percent built for 2027. Together with Kitimat they would give Canada three Pacific export docks.
