A funding JV is not a new pipe in the ground
Enbridge (TSX: ENB, NYSE: ENB) said August 27 it signed a definitive agreement with KKR, in collaboration with Apollo funds, to form a joint venture that will fund the already-sanctioned Aspen Point and Sunrise Expansion Programs on the Westcoast gas system. The investors put in about C$2.7 billion, including about C$0.7 billion of cash to Enbridge at closing, for an indirect, cumulative 29 percent interest in the aggregate Westcoast system once Sunrise enters service. Distributions start as each expansion enters service. Aspen Point is aimed at 2026. Sunrise is aimed at late 2028. The expansions already have regulatory approval and long-term take-or-pay contracts, the company said. Close is still subject to customary conditions. Do not write 29 percent as already transferred.
Enbridge keeps majority ownership and operational control, including execution of the expansions. It can repurchase the investors' interest any time between the seventh and fourteenth year after close. The company said the deal is not material to 2026 financial guidance or the medium-term outlook. Pat Murray called it capital recycling. Enbridge says that program has generated C$19 billion of proceeds since 2014. Morgan Stanley led. TD co-advised.
This is B.C. gas pipe, not yesterday's Permian gathering
The August 27 Salt Creek file was US$600 million of Delaware crude gathering, still waiting on HSR. This is a different note, dated the next morning. Westcoast can move up to 3.6 billion cubic feet a day now. Enbridge says that goes to 3.9 billion cubic feet a day after Sunrise. The system runs more than 2,900 kilometres from Fort Nelson and Gordondale south to Huntingdon/Sumas. Apollo's Jamshid Ehsani named B.C., the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and LNG as the demand story. That is offtake talk. It is not a new Kitimat train.
Neutral read
ENB is on the listed midstream list. Banks were skipped. C$2.7 billion, C$0.7 billion cash at close, and a 29 percent slice after Sunrise are the facts. Write this as a funded expansion, not as 0.3 billion cubic feet a day already flowing. Watch whether close actually happens, whether Aspen Point makes 2026, and whether Westcoast volumes show up as more Sumas deliveries or more Kitimat feed.
