The pipe is still down on the day the old window closed
Enbridge Inc. (TSX: ENB, NYSE: ENB) has kept Line 5 shut since August 25, when an unoccupied subcontractor flatbed truck rolled into an excavation at a valve project in Iron County, Wisconsin and struck the pipe. The release was natural gas liquids, mainly propane and butane, not dry gas. No injuries were reported.
In a September 3 incident update, Enbridge said restoration plans were progressing toward safely restoring service between September 6 and 8. That window superseded an earlier September 5 target. September 4 reporting, including Wisconsin Public Radio, said Enbridge now hopes to restore service on Tuesday, September 8, after compressed-air work to evaporate remaining liquids in the excavation.
Enbridge said September 3 that surface water and a nearby residential well showed no impacts, with air monitoring safe outside the evacuation zone. Keyera separately estimated a $30 million hit to 2026 Marketing margin from the outage.
Line 5 serves Midwest and Great Lakes refineries and propane facilities on the route from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Ontario.
