The pause is dated. It is not a new production permit
The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat posted September 15 that the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline, aviation gasoline, diesel, and other aviation fuel is extended through January 31, 2027. From February 1 through March 31, 2027, the tax is to apply at half the regular rate. Full rates return April 1, 2027: 10 cents a litre on gasoline and unleaded aviation gasoline, 11 cents on leaded aviation gasoline, and 4 cents on diesel and aviation fuel.
The pause first took effect April 20, 2026. Ottawa says that first day cut posted gasoline prices by 11 cents a litre. The estimated extra fiscal cost of this extension is about $2.9 billion, for $5.3 billion of estimated total tax relief in 2026-27. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Parliamentary Secretary Tom Osborne are on the release.
This is pump-and-budget paper. It does not change a 2026 oilsands guide, TMX nominations, or AESO megawatts. Listed refiners and marketers on the book, including Suncor (TSX: SU) and Imperial (TSX: IMO), still post their own rack prices. The federal cents are the only new dated number in this file.
