The weld held. Enbridge has not posted a flowing line
Enbridge Inc. (TSX: ENB, NYSE: ENB) posted a September 12 Line 5 update at 4:51 p.m. Central Time. Overnight, crews successfully pressure-tested the temporary bypass near Saxon, Wisconsin. Enbridge said it is now working through the highly regulated process of finalizing return to service, following a plan approved by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
That is a step past last night's note, which said mechanical construction was finished and a pressure test would run September 11. It is not a restart confirmation. The company did not say product is moving. Line 5 has been isolated since August 25, when an unoccupied subcontractor flatbed truck rolled into an excavation at a valve project and struck the pipe. The release was natural gas liquids, mainly propane and butane. No injuries were reported.
Enbridge said it continues to work with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on permitting and separately on environmental conditions at the incident site. The DNR's September 9 letters asked the company to halt bypass construction. Enbridge's Saturday note does not say it stopped. Testing of surface water and a nearby residential well continues to show no impacts, the company said. Water monitoring wells continue to show no contamination. The flatbed truck remains on site. A no-fly zone remains in effect per the Iron County Sheriff.
Line 5 supplies 10 refineries and propane production facilities in the Midwest and Great Lakes, Enbridge said. Keyera has estimated a $30 million reduction to 2026 Marketing segment realized margin from the outage. That number still hinges on when service actually resumes.
