Imperial Printed $2.2 Billion and Pointed at a Non-Binding Pathways MOU

Imperial's July 31 Q2 release showed $2,190 million of net income and 414,000 barrels a day upstream. Kearl did 257,000 barrels gross. After the quarter, Ottawa, Alberta, and oil-sands companies signed a non-binding trilateral memo. Pathways still needs real agreements.

The cash is in the quarter. The memo is not a permit

Imperial Oil (TSX: IMO) reported second-quarter 2026 results on July 31. Net income was $2,190 million. Operating cash flow was $2,704 million, or $2,522 million excluding working capital. Upstream averaged 414,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels a day. Kearl was 257,000 barrels a day gross (182,000 Imperial's share). Cold Lake was 149,000. Downstream utilization was 76 percent. The TSX renewed the normal-course issuer bid for up to 5 percent of the float, June 29, 2026 to June 28, 2027, as many as 24,176,637 shares. Imperial said it plans to finish the remaining room before year-end. ExxonMobil Holdings said it will sell in step to keep about 69.6 percent.

The sentence that is still future tense

After the quarter, a non-binding trilateral memorandum of understanding was signed by the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta, and Oil Sands Alliance companies. Imperial says it contemplates regulatory and fiscal changes meant to support oil-sands growth, and that advancing Pathways as written in that memo still needs definitive agreements and approvals. Non-binding is the word that matters. Pathways has been a slide for years. A memo does not inject CO2.

Neutral read

IMO is on the listed producer list. A $2.2 billion quarter and a fat Kearl print are the checkable facts. Seventy-six percent utilization is a soft refining quarter. The buyback acceleration is a capital-return choice, not a growth sanction. Do not write the MOU as a green light for a new oil-sands mine. Write it as Ottawa and Edmonton talking to the alliance. Watch whether definitive Pathways paper shows up, and whether Imperial actually retires the NCIB room by December.
